The National Lawyers Guild of Chicago’s Mass Defense Committee is an all-volunteer network of legal workers, law students, and lawyers committed to providing effective legal support for progressive protest movements and demonstrators. The Mass Defense Committee meets virtually every month.
To join NLG Chicago’s Mass Defense Committee, NLG members in good standing can express their interest by emailing the chapter’s Mass Defense Coordinator at nlg.chi.crimdefense@gmail.com. Below you’ll find the requirements that must be met in order to join the committee.
Requirements for joining the Mass Defense Committee:
- Must be a member in good standing
- Provide the names and contact information for 2 individuals who could speak to your legal and/or movement organizing work
- Have a one on one meeting with an active MDC member.
- Prior experience with NLG’s programmatic work (Legal Observing, Station House Representation, Criminal Defense, Law School Chapter involvement), movement, organizing or other relevant experience.
- Prospective members agree to the MDC Values.
NLG’s Mass Defense Committee will be notified about potential new members two weeks before the monthly MDC meeting where a vote on whether or not approved member can join the committee will take place. Before being added to the MDC listserv, new members will be required to sign NLG Chicago’s Confidentiality agreement and review MDC’s policies.
