Oscar Needs Your Help!

UPDATE!  From the Boricua Human Rights Network:

As of today, there is no word from the United States Parole Board (USPC) regarding Oscar López Rivera’s release.  Please continue to call-in, mail and fax letters. The USPC is telling callers that they must write (only write, not call or fax).  PLEASE CONTINUE TO CALL, part of our instance on calling is to offset the conservative and reactionary callers that are calling every day.

CONTINUE TO FAX THE LETTERS!  Here is a link to a petition you can send.  We have experienced, and heard from others across different countries that the fax lines are jammed. It often takes up to 1 hour or more to get through. THIS IS GOOD NEWS. It means that we are overwhelming them with faxes! Sympathizers, activists, students and organizers from Puerto Rico, the US, Mexico, Panama, Australia and Venezuela have been faxing, calling and mailing letters.

OUR ESTIMATE is that, since Oscar’s parole hearing on January 5, OVER 7000 letters have been faxed and mailed. The USPC has stated to te media that they have never had a case like this, with so much activity. We need to continue to apply the pressure! Please continue to fax, and mail letters! Please continue to call ONCE A DAY, EVERY DAY, UNTIL WE HEAR FROM THE PAROLE BOARD.

Support Oscar López Rivera

The U.S. Parole Commission is scheduled to make a determination as to the release of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera by February 1.  The Parole Commission is reviewing a biased and tainted recommendation to continue Oscar’s detention.

Please send this petition to the U.S. Parole Commission via fax — (301) 492-5307 — and demand that the Commission reject the Parole Examiner’s Recommendation and to order Oscar’s release on parole.  Time is running out.

For more information about Oscar, visit the National Boricua Human Rights Network.  Oscar is represented by NLG Chicago attorney Jan Susler, of the People’s Law Office.

Support Peter Erlinder

About Professor Erlinder

American law professor C. Peter Erlinder (William Mitchell College of Law — Minnesota) was imprisoned in Rwanda over accusations related to negating the Rwandan genocide. The Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation deplores this clearly politically-motivated arrest, and implores the international community to act quickly and decisively to demand Professor Erlinder’s immediate release from custody.

Prof. Erlinder, an outspoken critic of the Kagame regime, is frequently criticized by the Rwandan government. His name recently appeared on a publicized list of foreigners whom the Rwandan government allegedly wants silenced for their views. Erlinder traveled to Rwanda last month to defend presidential candidate Victoire Ingabire on the charges brought against her by the Rwandan government. Mrs. Ingabire, a political opponent of current President Kagame, was jailed recently and is currently under house arrest for expressing her political views, which are in opposition to official government policies.

Prof. Erlinder is a defense lawyer and leader of the association of defense attorneys at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania. His current trip to Rwanda was intended to provide defense counsel in a peaceful legal process, but, with this arrest, his human rights, liberty and, possibly, his personal safety are in danger.

Prof. Erlinder was reportedly arrested on charges of “genocide negationism,” which means that he disagrees with the official version of the 1994 genocide perpetuated by the current Rwandan regime. This law is frequently applied to silence critics of the regime. In the past it has been applied to Mrs. Ingabire, Human Rights Watch investigators, and even the BBC.

About the Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagin Foundation

The Chicago-based Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation was founded by Paul Rusesabagina, the real- life hero of the acclaimed film Hotel Rwanda. Rusesabagina, portrayed by Don Cheadle in the film, saved the lives of more than 1,200 people during the Rwandan genocide and has been honored internationally for his heroism. The Foundation works to prevent future genocides and to raise awareness of the need for a new truth and reconciliation process in Rwanda and the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

Cops Target Guild Legal Observers in Phoenix

The Guild Defends Your Right to Resist!

“At protests from D.C. to Miami to Los Angeles to Philadelphia to Saint Paul, Guild Legal Observers have been arrested, shot with projectiles, tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, and hit with batons, and we are still here to document misconduct.” —Carol Sobel, Co-Chair, Guild Mass Defense Committee

“Arresting a young woman of color who is there as an attorney-observer demonstrates how irresponsible and un-American the Arizona action is. I fear Arizona is starting to act like Mississippi in the civil rights days.” —Bill Quigley, Legal Director, Center for Constitutional Rights

National Lawyers Guild statement on arrests in Phoenix of Roxana Orell and Sunita Patel here!
