Korematsu Day @ Chicago-Kent

Fred Korematsu Day Film Screening & Discussion: “Of Civil Rights and Wrongs”

unnamed

In 1942, at the age of 23, Korematsu refused to go to the government’s incarceration camps for Japanese Americans. After he was arrested and convicted of defying the government’s order, he appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court. In 1944, the Supreme Court ruled against him, arguing that the incarceration was justified due to military necessity.

On Tuesday, February 9, at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, we honored Fred Korematsu, a civil rights hero by holding a special screening of the documentary “Of Civil Rights and Wrongs” which followed by reflections by a group of panelists, including a former internee of the Japanese internment camps.

In addition to providing information about mass incarceration, the prison industrial complex, and abolition as a concept, the NextGen Committee facilitated a community discussion about what it means for us as legal professionals to support the abolition of prisons.
Panelists included:

  • Pooja Gehi, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild (and former member of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project);
  • Lark Mulligan, law student and collective member, Transformative Justice Law Project (*invited); and

Kent Univ. Conversation with Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza

“We Got Somebody That Nobody Sent: A Conversation with Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza“

Chicago-Kent College of Law

565 W. Adams

Room 580

Last October, nearly one-third of Chicago City Council openly opposed the mayor’s budget. Despite Chicago’s tradition of machine politics, a new wave of progressive politicians has swept into the body, challenging regressive tax policies, increasing economic privatization, and cutbacks to both public education and services to low-income Chicagoans. One of the leading voices of this growing movement is 10th Ward Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza.

Alderwoman Garza will discuss her experiences as a community and labor activist on Chicago’s South Side, and how her experiences have shaped her political beliefs and activities. Alderwoman Garza is a counselor at Jane Addams Elementary School, and serves as an Area Vice President for the Chicago Teachers’ Union. She is also the proud daughter of a former regional director of the United Steelworkers of America, and a life-long resident of the 10th Ward of Chicago.

Co-sponsored by Kent Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, ACS, HLLSA, ILS, and LELS.

FREE Lunch will be provided!

NPAP Annual Fundraising Dinner Draws a Good Crowd

By Max Suchan

On the evening of October 2nd, around 40 lawyers, law students, and http://www.nlg-npap.org/sites/all/themes/vastuu/logo.pnglegal workers attended the fourth annual fundraising dinner of the Chicago chapter of the National Police Accountability Project. NPAP is a project of the NLG and is a non-profit membership organization of plaintiff’s lawyers, law students and legal workers dedicated to ending police abuse of authority through coordinated legal action, public education, and support for grassroots and victims’ organizations combating police misconduct. Chicago boasts a strong NPAP chapter whose members form a supportive network that shares insights and resources to advance broader work against police misconduct.

This year’s dinner was held at Nellies Puerto Rican restaurant in Humboldt Park. Attendees played a trivia game which tested their knowledge of local accomplishments and victories in police misconduct litigation. The fundraiser successfully celebrated a close-knit community that has accomplished so much in the past year at a crucial moment when police departments everywhere are under closer scrutiny in the public eye.
