Grand Jury CLE

On Tuesday, May 10, join the Chicago Chapters of the National Lawyers Guild and the American Constitution Society, ACLU of Illinois, National Conference of Black Lawyers, and CAIR-Chicago as we sponsor a fantastic CLE about the grand jury and current abuses thereof.
WHAT: Representing Clients In a Grand Jury Investigation Implicating Political Conduct.  Exploring:
  • A history of grand jury and executive power prosecutorial abuse, including the Palmer Raids, the McCarthy era, grand juries targeting Puerto Rican, civil rights and anti-war activists.
  • The ABC’s of representing people before grand juries, including important First Amendment rights for organizations whose records are subpoenaed,  implications of FBI infiltration, and how to use First Amendment rights to defend against grand jury subpoenas and prosecution.
  • First Amendment and criminal defense issues raised by Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project.
  • A client’s perspective.
SPEAKERS:
Michael Deutsch is a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer at People’s Law Office who has written about grandjury abuse.
Bernardine Dohrn is associate clinical professor at Northwestern’s Children and Family Justice Center, and was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in the early 1980’s but resisted and served time in prison for her refusal.
Aziz Huq is an assistant professor at University of Chicago Law School, and previously litigated national security cases at the Brennan Center for Justice.
Stan Willis is a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer, activist, and active member of NCBL.
Susan Gzesh (moderator) is the director of the University of Chicago Human Rights Program and is a lawyer.
